Taking care of your potted plants

mullanvaihto-2134328

Crazy plant lady here hi! My small studio apartment has currently ten, yes ten, plants. Some could say that´s quite a lot, but I actually like the green around me. And it is good for the room air also, so win-win situation. But tell me, when is the last time you have changed the potting soil of your plants? If you can´t remember, please dedicate an hour or two this weekend to take care of your green family members.

We don´t have to put new potting soil every year, but it is good to do so every few years depending on the plant and its condition. I try to do this every two years, and spring is said to be the best time for new soil. As I know this is something that most of us easily forget, I wanted to write few tips for you, and hopefully, your plants will be greener than ever after little extra love this spring.

There are few easy steps you can follow:

  1. First, the plants should be watered thoroughly so that the root ball can be kept better together later in the process
  2. It is good to choose a new pot which is few centimeters wider than the old one
  3. Water the new plant soil in a separate container before placing it in the pots. A suitable ratio is about 50-100 ml water per liter of soil
  4. You should place the root ball in the center of the new pot and then fill the edged with new potting soil. Be careful with compaction
  5. Remember to leave little space to the top if the pot does not have a underwatering system.
  6. After the process is good to protect the plants from direct sunlight
  7. To avoid wilting you can spray your plants with water
  8. Give the new soil dry for a couple of days before the first watering

I am definitely not an expert when it comes to plants, but I have few tips and tricks to share. You should keep the potting soil moist, but not wet. If the soil is too wet or too dry you can end up damaging the roots. Check always how much watering is required for different plants. Underwatering pots are from my experience easier when you are not sure how much watering is good. Don´t move your plants around a lot, as plants are actually quite sensitive to changes. They adapt slowly to their new environment and have different preferences when it comes to the amount of sunlight. Plants also do not enjoy temperature changes. Remember to prune your plants regularly. This helps to keep the plants healthy and you don´t have to replant so often.

Easy coffee table transformation

diytables-1012943

When I knew I would be moving to my studio apartment, the amount of time I spend in Pinterest was crazy. Luckily I had a holiday before my moving day, so we can just say that time well spend right? I wanted to find ideas how to style small apartment, and seek inspiration for furniture also. I only had a kitchen table, so needed to find quite many things, such as sofa and coffee table. First I thought I could find a nice small coffee table made from marble, but the prices were quite high, so I wanted to rethink the idea. And then suddenly I remembered, that my mam had bought some years a go cool set of three small tables from the flee market. Luckily she did not need them; jackpot for me!

As I had decided, that I want to have golden details in my new home, it was clear the tables would need a little transformation. The tables were luckily in a nice conditions, and did not need too much work. I washed the tables, used little sandpaper and then sprayed two layers of paint.

I ended up using two different paints, which was not my original plan. The paint I originally bought ended up being little wrong shade, so I went to buy another color for the final layer. A good solutions in the end, as two layers is not only covering better the original shade, but is also more durable. Just remember to have long enough drying time between the two layers.

layer

Here you can see the difference between the two layers (sorry for the super bad photo). The first paint gave the tables more bronze tone and was matte. The second paint I used was more shiny and the end result more the tone I was hoping for. Especially in the photos with the crazy chicken candle holders it is easy to see, that the end result fits perfectly to other golden details I have. I ended up also using the same painting method to one other DIY project, but let´s talk about that some other time!

One can never have too many flowers

One very ordinary thing I love in life, is cleaning home just before the weekend, and buying fresh flowers to that clean home. Flowers are easy and, not that expensive way to give that little something to your home. I have been dreaming of having that one special flower shop, where I could go and be sure, that I get not only quality flowers, but also good service. Unfortunately I have been moving so much, that this dream has stayed as a dream for a long time. But as I am now staying more permanently in Helsinki, it was time to start looking for that “special one”.

I live quite close to the city center, and only few minutes walk away from my home there is old market hall Hakaniemen halli, and market square Hakaniemen tori. Earlier this week I was walking home, and took a shortcut across the square, which ended up being one of the best decisions this week. There was a flower stand full of beautiful flowers, and for a moment, it felt like I was in Breda again, and shopping in the market square. The man who owns the stand was super helpful, happy to share tips and helped me to choose the best flowers for my need. And the best part? Well, the prices were so much lower than in flower shops (I paid 15€ for all the flowers in these photos), and they had also flowers produced in Finland.

I think it is important to support small local businesses, and producers. I was so happy to find this flower stand, and get extremely good service. The owner told me they are working year around, and would happily order any seasonal flowers I would need in the future. For sure only after one visit I can tell, that I have found “the special one”, and I will be recommending him to all my friends in the area. I have been so happy every day now watching these beautiful flowers, and can´t wait to go flower shopping again.

There is no such thing as too many flowers right?
