Taking care of your potted plants

mullanvaihto-2134328

Crazy plant lady here hi! My small studio apartment has currently ten, yes ten, plants. Some could say that´s quite a lot, but I actually like the green around me. And it is good for the room air also, so win-win situation. But tell me, when is the last time you have changed the potting soil of your plants? If you can´t remember, please dedicate an hour or two this weekend to take care of your green family members.

We don´t have to put new potting soil every year, but it is good to do so every few years depending on the plant and its condition. I try to do this every two years, and spring is said to be the best time for new soil. As I know this is something that most of us easily forget, I wanted to write few tips for you, and hopefully, your plants will be greener than ever after little extra love this spring.

There are few easy steps you can follow:

  1. First, the plants should be watered thoroughly so that the root ball can be kept better together later in the process
  2. It is good to choose a new pot which is few centimeters wider than the old one
  3. Water the new plant soil in a separate container before placing it in the pots. A suitable ratio is about 50-100 ml water per liter of soil
  4. You should place the root ball in the center of the new pot and then fill the edged with new potting soil. Be careful with compaction
  5. Remember to leave little space to the top if the pot does not have a underwatering system.
  6. After the process is good to protect the plants from direct sunlight
  7. To avoid wilting you can spray your plants with water
  8. Give the new soil dry for a couple of days before the first watering

I am definitely not an expert when it comes to plants, but I have few tips and tricks to share. You should keep the potting soil moist, but not wet. If the soil is too wet or too dry you can end up damaging the roots. Check always how much watering is required for different plants. Underwatering pots are from my experience easier when you are not sure how much watering is good. Don´t move your plants around a lot, as plants are actually quite sensitive to changes. They adapt slowly to their new environment and have different preferences when it comes to the amount of sunlight. Plants also do not enjoy temperature changes. Remember to prune your plants regularly. This helps to keep the plants healthy and you don´t have to replant so often.

Green and gold

Finally I have few details to share from my new home. It is starting to look more and more “ready” (can interior ever be ready btw?) and everything seems to find right place. I still have few things I have not found, and around million DIY projects going on, but I decided that I want to share few detail anyway. Like I told before here, my previous homes have been very different than this one, and gold has never been my color. So I have absolutely no idea how I ended up decorating with golden details this apartment, but I could not be happier about my decision.

I have tried to add golden details in small amounts to here and there, and one of the first things I bought was the golden basket from House Doctor you see in the photo above. I think I have to make a separated post about the brand, as they have so many beautiful things available. The white pineapple is a gift from a friend, and from H&M home collection. Some of you might remember my crazy addiction towards pineapples in home decor in my old blog, and I am happy I finally have one!

I absolutely love hat boxes, and storage in them so many things. I like the round shapes, and they give so much prettier look than normal boxes. This one I found from Stockmann, it is from Bigso box of Sweden. I am currently using this one for all gloves and hats, but I have few more full of candles, office assessors and other small things.

I actually asked only for one Christmas gift last year, a new carpet, and got it from my family. This is probably nothing new for most of you, as similar style has been dominating the interior blogs and magazines for a quite long time already. One could even say this is so last season, BUT I do not care! It was what I wanted, and I think it fits nicely to my home. This one is from Ellos, and called Zagora. I wanted this one as it is allergy friendly, so for my asthma it is perfect. For the summer I am hoping to fins something little lighter!

These crazy candle holders are for sure my favorite thing in my home, and I will be telling more about them later in separate post. They are too cool not to have their own moment, haha!

Addition to gold and gray, I have been trying to add a hint of blush pink. I made all the pillow covers myself, and found the pink fabric super cheap from sales.  I am just thinking now if I should get rid of the gray velvet ones, and add something lighter instead, what you think?

And then there is the green! Well I have super small studio apartment, and currently six, yes SIX plants. Haha, I am allergic to animals so I am making my self a crazy plant lady. But seriously talking, I think everyone should have plants in their home. They are so good for the air, and gives fresh and clean feeling. I also like the contrast with gray and white, just perfect combination. But you need to take good care about your plants, so I am writing a post about that as soon I have time to edit the photos for that story.

I had a talk about the amount of candle holders a girl needs. Well my friend Miss. V and I believe the amount is a lot! I am the kind of girl who had a huge box full of candle holder when unpacking all my things. Yeas, a full box, and I am not even shamed of it. The ones in the picture are my favorites, and I am using them almost every evening. Just imagine the amount of candles I use..I know! The glass ones are called Iittala kivi, a true classic from Finland,  and the other ones are from Granit.

So how do you like my green and gold details so far? After taking these photos a lot has changed already actually, and I can´t wait to be home in the day time the upcoming weekend, so I can make some new photos. And hey if there is something you would especially see/read about my home please let me know!

Have a nice evening,

New home, new interior style

I rented my first studio apartment in 2008, and I am same time sad and happy, that I cannot show to you how it was decorated. I loved that time strong colors, and used a lot dark red. In my second home I even painted the kitchen cabinets with dark red color, I remember that the color was called pomegranate. Those times I also tried a lot different styles, as I was working in a clothes shop, and new trends were coming and going all the time. But after those years, my style has been going more and more simple and minimalist, and every time I wear some other color than black, people around me are shocked. My two last studios were one of those extremely white (with hint of black) Scandinavian inspired homes.

During my stay in the Netherlands I saw so much different styles, and got so much inspiration from people, shops, homes of my friends, bars, magazines and basically from everywhere. There was nothing boring, nothing too white and simple, and same time nothing too much. And suddenly all white everything in interior is not appealing to me anymore. A part of personal growth maybe? I did buy also red, gray and beige (yeas me!!) clothes this autumn. So how will be the interior in my new home? Definitely not white on white, but blush pink, gray and gold!

moodboard_apartment

I have no idea where did I get this color combination into my mind, as it so unusual combination for me. But it feel so fresh, and something different. I want my home to feel home, cozy and soft. I want to have blushed soft tones, and for contrast some golden details and green from plants. I have loft bed in my new home, the sofa in the picture I already bought, my DIY lamp project got inspiration from the lamp in the mood-boar I made, and the carpet you can see from the photos. I have so many ideas, and I am so exited how the apartment will look later. I will not do everything at once, but I have already a lot new things for this home.

apartment_empty-2-of-7

The kitchen is white and simple, and I will use there also some golden details, and “crystal”, so that it would fit better with the other parts of my small apartment.  And like you can see from the photo below, the bathroom is dark gray/ white, so I can easily use the same color palette there also.

So what do you think about my plans so far? Tomorrow I have to go buy few missing things, so that I can spend all the weekend unpacking without stress. I already went to clean the new home and check what I am missing already. Exited, almost moving day!!

xoxo,
