DIY golden plant pot

I once again ended up buying few new plants (crazy I know) and of course pots for them. I did buy few new ones, but I had also one old one, just in little boring colour. In general I don’t like buying always new things, and for this reason, I try to give new life to the old ones with a little makeover when possible. I transformed my old pot into golden beauty, and now it fits perfectly with my other pots, which are all mainly black or white.

For this easy DIY project all you need is some paint, a brush and old pot. I used acrylic paint as I had some left from my painting projects (I have used the same paint for these invitations and painting). I painted the pot once with very relaxed brush strokes so that I could create lively texture. I left the pot to dry for few hours and after it was ready for use. Super simple isn’t it? And of course, you can use any paint you want, and mix colours. I was also planning some stripes, or “dipped” effect for some of my other pots, but let’s see what I end up doing with them.

The plant, by the way,  is Calathea (Nukkumaija in Finnish). Calathea should be easy to take care of, and I especially love the different shades of green it has. I also like the contrast of bright green and gold, looks so fresh!

Creativity is a state of mind

painting17-3054873

For some reason, I have been very nervous to share this project here, as I haven´t done anything like this before. I do a lot of creative projects, and I share a lot my work, but somehow this one feels different. In general, I don’t think myself as a very artistic person, but I decided to give it a try. And why is that? Well, like many times in life, I had clear ideas for my art wall, but could not find what I was looking for. Now when I think about it, is not a huge surprise as I had specific size and color scheme in mind. I also wanted to test my creativity in a new way, and stop thinking that there is something I can´t do.

For my first painting, I used acrylic paints and I chose five basic colors, which I then mixed for more shades. This was my first work, so I did not want to spend money on super expensive paints, as I had no idea if I could create what I had in my mind.  I was trying to keep the overall feeling light, but also to create little depth with gray and gold. It is kind of taking all the colors I am using in my interior at the moment into one. I really like the end results, and have some more ideas I want to test out later.

creativity

I wanted to add this quote from Mary Lou Cook here, as it kind of makes it very clear to me, that this was truly a creative process. And that even if sometimes I feel I am not that creative I want to be, I can be if I just believe it. We should try more, test new things, not to be afraid to fail, try different things, take the risk and in the end, realize how much fun you can have. For me, creativity is a state of mind, and we all have it in us if we just give it a chance?

I would love to hear what you think about this? And also would you be interested to read more about creativity? I studied the topic a lot in the Netherlands, so I think have a word or two to say about it.

Easy coffee table transformation

diytables-1012943

When I knew I would be moving to my studio apartment, the amount of time I spend in Pinterest was crazy. Luckily I had a holiday before my moving day, so we can just say that time well spend right? I wanted to find ideas how to style small apartment, and seek inspiration for furniture also. I only had a kitchen table, so needed to find quite many things, such as sofa and coffee table. First I thought I could find a nice small coffee table made from marble, but the prices were quite high, so I wanted to rethink the idea. And then suddenly I remembered, that my mam had bought some years a go cool set of three small tables from the flee market. Luckily she did not need them; jackpot for me!

As I had decided, that I want to have golden details in my new home, it was clear the tables would need a little transformation. The tables were luckily in a nice conditions, and did not need too much work. I washed the tables, used little sandpaper and then sprayed two layers of paint.

I ended up using two different paints, which was not my original plan. The paint I originally bought ended up being little wrong shade, so I went to buy another color for the final layer. A good solutions in the end, as two layers is not only covering better the original shade, but is also more durable. Just remember to have long enough drying time between the two layers.

layer

Here you can see the difference between the two layers (sorry for the super bad photo). The first paint gave the tables more bronze tone and was matte. The second paint I used was more shiny and the end result more the tone I was hoping for. Especially in the photos with the crazy chicken candle holders it is easy to see, that the end result fits perfectly to other golden details I have. I ended up also using the same painting method to one other DIY project, but let´s talk about that some other time!
